Introduction of Ticlopidine
Ticlopidine is used to reduce the risk of
stroke. It works by preventing excessive blood clotting. This
medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your
doctor or pharmacist for more information. Ticlopidine also is
used before open heart surgery and in the treatment of sickle
cell disease, certain types of kidney disease, and blocked
arteries in the legs. Talk to your doctor about the possible
risks of using this drug for your condition.
Precautions Before Taking Ticlopidine

tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to
ticlopidine or any other drugs.

tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and
nonprescription medications you are taking, especially
antacids, anticoagulants such as warfarin, aspirin,
cimetidine, digoxin , theophylline, and vitamins.

if
you also take antacids take them 1 hour before or 2 hours
after taking ticlopidine.

tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease,
bleeding disorders, bleeding ulcers, low blood cell counts ,
kidney disease, high blood cholesterol, or high blood fats.

tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become
pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant
while taking ticlopidine, call your doctor.

you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the
doctor or dentist that you are taking ticlopidine. Your
doctor may tell you to stop taking ticlopidine 10-14 days
before your procedure. Follow these directions.
Side Effects of Ticlopidine
Although side effects from ticlopidine are not
common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these
symptoms are severe or do not go away:

upset stomach

diarrhea
-
vomiting
-
stomach pain
-
loss of appetite
-
gas
-
headache
-
itching
If you experience any of the following
symptoms, or those listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section,
call your doctor immediately:

fever, sore throat, or other signs of infection
-
unusual bleeding or bruising
-
light-colored stools
-
skin rash
